Restoring the Creek Area: Our Landcare Project with Hastings Landcare

We are excited to share our recent landcare project which focused on the creek area opposite the maze on our property at Bago Maze and Wine.

After being devoid of trees for over 40 years, we saw this as an opportunity to restore the area to its natural state. With the help of a landcare grant from Hastings Landcare, we were able to fund the necessary work and make a positive impact on the environment.

Planting native trees

One of the primary goals of our project was to improve the water quality and create a habitat for wildlife. To achieve this, we planted locally native trees along the creek line. These trees not only naturally grow in other parts of our farm but also help prevent stream bank erosion and reduce weed competition. By taking these steps, we aim to restore balance and health to this ecosystem.

Protecting the creek

To ensure the long-term success of our landcare project, we installed fencing to protect the creek area from our livestock. By fencing off the creek bank and providing alternative watering troughs in the paddock, we prevent direct access to the water source for our cattle. This not only protects the creek bank from erosion but also safeguards the water quality, benefiting both the environment and our livestock.

Commitment to ongoing efforts

As farmers, we understand the importance of maintaining the health and balance of our land. We are fully dedicated to this project and will continue to thin out weeds and work in this area until it becomes a thriving piece of bush. This is our second landcare project on our property, with the first one completed five years ago, which involved planting trees along the creek bank as well.

Contributing to the Hastings Landcare movement

We are proud to be part of the Hastings Landcare movement and contribute to the preservation of our natural environment. By sharing our experiences and the positive outcomes of our landcare projects, we hope to inspire others to consider sustainable practices and give back to the land that supports them.
