Set in the hinterland near Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW, Bago's hedge maze was designed and is still shaped by hand by Ian Mobbs, landscape architect, and third generation of the family that farms this land.
Bridges, lookout towers and hidden turns wait around every corner, built for families and adults to explore at their own pace, together or apart.
From a Drawing to a Living Landscape
Long before the hedges grew overhead, Bago Maze began with an idea and a drawing.
Designed by landscape architect Ian Mobbs, the maze was planned and brought to life here on the family farm. Planting began in 2006, using native lilly pillies grown from seedlings propagated on the property. The rocks and timber used throughout the maze were also sourced from the farm, grounding its design in the landscape around it.
Built, planted and cared for by the Mobbs family, the maze took six years to grow before opening to visitors in 2012. What began as young seedlings and pathways marked across a paddock gradually became the more than 2km of towering green corridors, bridges and lookout points visitors explore today.
The maze continues to be shaped and maintained by the family — the result of years of patience, practical ingenuity and hard work.
From very grassroots beginnings, Bago Maze is a reminder that some things simply take time to grow.

What began as an ambitious idea on a family farm has grown into Australia's largest hedge maze — more than 2km of pathways shaped by years of growth, care and a little persistence.

Good to Know
Last maze entry: 4pm
Time to allow: Most visitors spend around 20–60 minutes exploring, although you're welcome to take your time.
Prams & wheelchairs: The maze is pram and wheelchair friendly.
Little explorers: Children under five enter free.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome on lead in Bago's grass and picnic areas but are not permitted inside the hedge maze.
Weather: Bago remains open in wet weather. The maze temporarily closes during thunderstorms for visitor safety.
